The long path to the throne has only just begun for Aelin Galathynius. Loyalties have been broken and bought, friends have been lost and gained, and those who possess magic find themselves at odds with those don't.
As the kingdoms of Erilea fracture around her, enemies must become allies if Aelin is to keep those she loves from falling to the dark forces poised to claim her world. With war looming on all horizons, the only chance for salvation lies in a desperate quest that may mark the end of everything Aelin holds dear.
Aelin's journey from assassin to queen has entranced millions across the globe, and this fifth installment will leave fans breathless. Will Aelin succeed in keeping her world from splintering, or will it all come crashing down?
Where do I even begin? Coming in at just over 700 pages, this fifth installment of the Throne of Glass series felt like a journey of epic proportions for our ever-growing cast of characters. But before you start reading this book, I would highly recommend you read the Throne of Glass Novellas (all five can be found together in one compilation called The Assassin’s Blade). There are characters and events referenced in those that you’ll definitely need to know about in this book.
The thing that struck me about this book was that Aelin was far from my favorite character. I almost couldn’t wait to get past her chapters and see who was next. For me, this book was all about my girl Manon, with Elide coming in a close second. I have loved Manon since we first met her, and she doesn’t let me down in this installment. Elide’s scenes with Lorcan were also great – she has proven her strength and intelligence over and over.
I really enjoyed the dynamics in the various character interactions. There are friends, enemies, lovers, flirtations, new alliances, and even a father/son relationship. I also really liked Lysandra’s role in this story. While she hasn’t been a character that I’ve had strong feelings about up to this point, I really enjoyed her in this book. I felt like we got to better know some characters who have previously been in the background, making every battle feel more significant.
Empire of Storms by Sarah J. Maas is filled with action, action, action! Action on the battlefield, action at sea, action in the bedroom…it is non-stop! There are several different hook-ups, with some pretty steamy scenes. It definitely goes above the typical YA action-happening-off-the-page love scene. And some of it will no doubt have you rolling your eyes. Or clutching your pearls, depending on where you fall on these type of scenes!
And oh, that ending! Bringing things into perspective, offering a few surprises, and then leaving me wanting more…I can’t wait to see how all of this ultimately plays out. And then read the entire series and fall in love with it all over again!
