St. Vladimir’s Academy isn’t just any boarding school—it’s a hidden place where vampires are educated in the ways of magic and half-human teens train to protect them. Rose Hathaway is a Dhampir, a bodyguard for her best friend Lissa, a Moroi Vampire Princess. They’ve been on the run, but now they’re being dragged back to St. Vladimir’s—the very place where they’re most in danger...\r\n\r\nRose and Lissa become enmeshed in forbidden romance, the Academy’s ruthless social scene, and unspeakable nighttime rituals. But they must be careful lest the Strigoi—the world’s fiercest and most dangerous vampires—make Lissa one of them forever.

This book was on my TBR list for quite awhile, yet I continued to put it off to pursue other, “more interesting” reads.  What was I thinking?!  Mead writes a great cross-genre story of an academy for vampires that’s full of social trickery, power struggles and hormones.  The book starts off at night, so you get the sense of dark and foreboding, and the pace keeps a quick tempo from there.  I can practically see the antagonist, Rose, standing in the window, peering out into the night.  And Rose is a kick-ass heroine.  She’s not afraid to tell you like it is and do what needs to get done, everyone else be damned.  Her bond with her best friend is touching, showing a soft side I think she needs, to balace herself out.  Mead writes her well.

As I was reading, I thought idlly to myself, “Jenn, this book is pretty good. It’s not great, but it’s worth 4 stars.”  I was fully prepared to give it that rating.  Then the ending just knocked my socks off!  I cannot wait to read Frostbite: Vampire Academy Book 2 (but I have to…galley reviews need to go out, sigh). I think anyone who likes paranormal fiction and young adult will enjoy this novel.
