Every morning, Melanie waits in her cell to be collected for class.

When they come for her, Sergeant Parks keeps his gun pointing at her while two of his people strap her into the wheelchair. She thinks they don't like her. She jokes that she won't bite. But they don't laugh.

Melanie is a very special girl.\r\n\r\nEmotionally charged and gripping from beginning to end, THE GIRL WITH ALL THE GIFTS is the most powerful and affecting thriller you will read this year.

When I started this book, I wasn’t entirely sure from the description where it was going to go. When I discovered the direction we were headed was post-apocalyptic zombies with a scientific twist, I could not have been more excited! It was impossible not to like Melanie – 10 years old, smart, and all she wants is to please her favorite teacher, Ms. Justineau.  But Melanie and her classmates are prisoners, most of their teachers are scared of them, and there is more to their situation than meets the eye.  This definitely wasn’t just your typical “band of plucky survivors” zombie story. Sure, some of the characters seemed like they might fill the obligatory roles, but we got to see things from each character’s perspective, get inside their heads, and they became more than just one-dimensional. The Girl with All the Gifts by M.R. Carey is a completely fresh take on zombies and the way the world would react to them. There isn’t much else I can say without giving anything away. But, oh, that ending! I was not a fan.  Unexpected, original, and maybe even thought-provoking?  Yes. But it didn’t leave this reader very happy.  However, I thoroughly enjoyed the journey getting to that ending, and I think that anyone else who likes a good zombie story would enjoy it, too.
