Welcome! Indie Author Excerpts is a new feature allowing indie authors the chance to showcase one of their books and allows readers to find their next favorite story. Each week, an indie author gets to promote a 1-2 page excerpt of their book here at The Bawdy Book Blog. This is a win-win for everyone! This feature was inspired in part by Indie Author Spotlight, a meme hosted by Beckie @ Bittersweet Enchantment and CYP @ A Bookalicious Story.

It’s a final showdown for control of the Starfire. Raea and Elis’s bond is strong, but the Shirukan intend to use it to force her hand to give up the Starfire shard. To complicate matters, a shadow from Elis’s past has returned, claiming to help; but when he betrays Elis to the Shirukan, Raea must figure out whom she can trust before it’s too late.
All of Inar’Ahben is counting on them to keep the Starfire out of the wrong hands, but the Starfire has other ideas. They leave Raea with only one choice—make the ultimate sacrifice or risk losing everything to the Shirat Empire.
Elis! Panic swept through Raea and cut off. She snapped her eyes open to the quiet room of Starfire Tower. Saffir sat facing her with her back to the window wall, which looked out onto a sunny sky. Puffs of clouds floated serenely out there. That perfect tranquility was a mirage. Something had happened. She’d felt a heightened sense of danger in her connection to Elis, seen…What had she seen? Black shapes, like Shirukan. Her wings snapped to her back with the realization. It must have been a dream. That can’t be right. A beep came from a panel near the door, but no one entered. [“Starfire Control to Crystal Keeper Saffir,”] a female voice said. Saffir inhaled sharply and opened her eyes. [“I’m here. Go ahead, Sarela.”] [“Is Crystal Keeper Raea with you?”] Saffir met her eyes, her blue wings tightening. That couldn’t be good. Raea’s heart raced in dread of what that question meant. [“Yes.”] The woman paused, then said, [“I’m sorry, Crystal Keeper Raea. The Shirukan have taken Elis.”] No! Her brain froze in disbelief. No. No. No. No. They couldn’t have. He was out flying with Toril. Toril! It had all been a trick. He’d lured Elis out. It had all been an elaborate Shirukan plot, just as she feared. Elis… [“Raea…”] A light touch on her hand pulled her misty gaze to the sorrow sagging the old visage. This couldn’t be happening. After all they had endured, after Elis had finally made up with Toril, the Shirukan couldn’t have him now. A sob choked her. She sniffed and swiped her eyes, but the tears continued. [“Elis.”] Why would they do this? The answer slammed her immediately—to get to her. Toril had tried to capture Elis once before to use him to get to his father’s shard. Now they succeeded in their goal, but this time they sought to use him to get to her. Hadn’t he suffered enough? Why couldn’t the empire let them live in peace? Anger flared inside her, part of it at herself for daring to trust Toril but most of all the Shirukan and their stupid empress. Damn them! She wouldn’t let them take Elis. There had to be a way to save him. Raea jumped to her feet, her wings spreading and the resonance warming through her. She would bring him back. No window would stand in her way. Elis, I’m coming. If she had to fly all the way to the Shirat Empire herself, she would.
