For as long as she can remember, Gwendolyn Allister has never had a place to call home—all because her mother believes that monsters are hunting them. Now these delusions have brought them to London, far from the life Gwen had finally started to build for herself. The only saving grace is her best friend, Olivia, who’s coming with them for the summer.\r\n\r\nBut when Gwen and Olivia are kidnapped by shadowy creatures and taken to a world of flesh-eating sea hags and dangerous Fey, Gwen realizes her mom might have been sane all along.\r\n\r\nThe world Gwen finds herself in is called Neverland, yet it’s nothing like the stories. Here, good and evil lose their meaning and memories slip like water through her fingers. As Gwen struggles to remember where she came from and find a way home, she must choose between trusting the charming fairy-tale hero who says all the right things and the roguish young pirate who promises to keep her safe.\r\n\r\nWith time running out and her enemies closing in, Gwen is forced to face the truths she’s been hiding from all along. But will she be able to save Neverland without losing herself?\r\n

Unhooked by Lisa Maxwell was chosen as the inaugural book for @notyourmamasbookclub on Instagram. I have never participated in a book discussion like this one, but the book sounded intriguing and the group sounded like something I would enjoy. The idea was that the readers would discuss 10 chapters per week, based on questions provided by the hosts. I flew through the first 10 chapters. I actually read them during a rainy car ride and was hesitant to put the book down, but I wanted to give this format a shot. I was totally intrigued by the characters and the setting, although I wasn’t terribly attached to the main character, Gwen. I couldn’t wait to learn more! unhooked   The following week, I again flew through the 10 chapters. I had lots of questions, but I was sure they would be answered. I seemed to miss out on the timing of the discussion each Sunday, but I enjoyed going back and reading all of the theories and questions, and many of them matched my own. At this point, I decided that I didn’t want to stretch it out any longer, and since I wasn’t truly being active in the discussions, I could justify going ahead and reading the rest of the book.   This is where my opinion started to change somewhat. I was still completely fascinated with the character who was Hook, and I liked that it completely turned the story of Peter Pan on its head and changed everything. It was also darker than your typical YA fantasy, which was also a plus. But unfortunately, the book started to drag, and my biggest overall complaint was that questions never got answered! Sure, there was a final resolution to the story, but there were SO many unanswered questions! So much backstory left unexplored! It was extremely frustrating. This was an excellent premise that just didn’t deliver.   I’m not sure the format of reading only a few chapters at a time is for me, either. I have a hard time putting a book down when it’s one that I’m really into, and I don’t like having more than one book going at a time. But that won’t stop me from participating again, because I thought that the discussion was great, the questions were  thought-provoking, and it was fun to hear other people’s ideas about what was going on. They also share some pretty amazing book pics! If you have any interest in joining in, I’m sure they’d love to have you – hop on over and check out @notyourmamasbookclub on Instagram. Though I only gave the book 2.5 stars, I give their book club a solid 4!

Jessica’s addiction to books began at age 4, going on weekly trips to the library with her mom. After being a young fan of Sweet Valley High and The Baby-Sitters Club, she discovered the thrill of reading a book that made her want to leave the light on and check under the bed. Her all-time favorite author is Stephen King, but she will read just about anything! Jessica never leaves home without her e-reader, and considers it the best gift she ever received. Her other hobbies include running and going to Disney World as often as possible.
