Natasha: I’m a girl who believes in science and facts. Not fate. Not destiny. Or dreams that will never come true. I’m definitely not the kind of girl who meets a cute boy on a crowded New York City street and falls in love with him. Not when my family is twelve hours away from being deported to Jamaica. Falling in love with him won’t be my story.

Daniel: I’ve always been the good son, the good student, living up to my parents’ high expectations. Never the poet. Or the dreamer. But when I see her, I forget about all that. Something about Natasha makes me think that fate has something much more extraordinary in store—for both of us.

The Universe: Every moment in our lives has brought us to this single moment. A million futures lie before us. Which one will come true?

“We are capable of big lives. A big history. Why settle? Why choose the practical thing, the mundane thing? We are born to dream and make the things we dream about.”

I was a big fan of Nicola Yoon’s first book, Everything, Everything, so I was thrilled to see this one in the November Uppercase Box. And as soon as I started reading it, I was hooked. This was something different, something special. Diverse characters, a unique plot, and it takes place in New York, one of my favorite places in the world. I’m not typically a fan of romance as the primary focus, but this was just so charming that I couldn’t resist.

One of my favorite things about this book was that it had small chapters for the secondary characters that showed how a small interaction with someone can have a drastic impact on our lives. Sometimes you don’t even know realize how something simple that you say or do can alter the course for someone else. I find this fascinating and I loved that we got this glimpse into other characters.

Let’s talk about Natasha. I can’t even imagine knowing that your entire family is going to be deported, and you have to leave everything that is familiar for a life in a place you barely remember and don’t relate to. But instead of wallowing in despair, this girl decided to do more than the adults in her life – she stepped up and did everything in her power to appeal the deportation. Talk about a strong female role model! And her hair sounded amazing, too.

I tend to have a love/hate relationships with books that take place over just one day. I WANT MORE! But on the other hand, I always find it intriguing when one day can change someone’s life. The story was fast paced, and I couldn’t wait to find out what happened. Despite the serious subject matter, I found myself laughing with and cheering for these two crazy kids. Daniel was  just too adorable. I loved his wit and enjoyed seeing how he matured throughout the story.

The Sun Is Also a Star by Nicola Yoon was a great story from beginning to end. I loved the ending, I thought it was perfect and echoed the theme of the book really well. It will make you laugh, and it will make you think. The writing is beautiful – there were so many quotes that I loved. This one would definitely fall into the re-read category – it’s one of those rare books that makes me happy just to think about.

“Sometimes your world shakes so hard, it’s difficult to imagine that everyone else isn’t feeling it too.”

Jessica’s addiction to books began at age 4, going on weekly trips to the library with her mom. After being a young fan of Sweet Valley High and The Baby-Sitters Club, she discovered the thrill of reading a book that made her want to leave the light on and check under the bed. Her all-time favorite author is Stephen King, but she will read just about anything! Jessica never leaves home without her e-reader, and considers it the best gift she ever received. Her other hobbies include running and going to Disney World as often as possible.
