“Home isn’t where you’re from, it’s where you find light when all grows dark.” ― Pierce Brown
Golden Son by Pierce Brown is the second installment in the Red Rising trilogy, and I was extremely excited that it was being released a few days after I finished the first book (which was amazing!). It picks up two years after Red Rising, and we are immediately swept back into the action with Darrow. This time around, it’s completely different, but just as great. I don’t want to give anything away about the plot, especially for those who haven’t read the first book. But this book definitely does not fall into the sophomore slump that many middle books of a trilogy do. It kept the plot moving, the action was non-stop, and OH MY GOODNESS…that ending! The writing was great, although I felt like I sometimes had to read more slowly than usual because I had to really pay attention – there were so many little intricacies, so much action, and lots of character names to keep track of. I didn’t mind, though, since I was enjoying it so much. There were some surprises, a few revelations, a sprinkle of humor, and a lot of badassery (that may not be a real word, but once you meet Darrow, you will agree that it should be!). My only complaint is that now I have to wait a whole year to find out how the series will end. But let’s face it: that will just give me a chance to re-read the first two books before the third is released. I really cannot get enough of these books!
