1. The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho

This book will undoubtedly leave an impact on you. Every individual will take different things from this book depending on what stage of life you’re at. It’s a simple tale about a young sheepherder, Santiago, and his search for treasures. But it gives so many important life lessons throughout. It focuses on following your dreams and taking the risks necessary with courage and faith in the outcome. Something many people never do because of fear. And how all of the answers you need, you can find within yourself.

2. Da Vinci Code by Dan Brown

This tale focuses on a baffling cipher that is left next to the murdered elderly curator, whose body was found inside a museum. It seems almost impossible to figure out but Langdon (the protagonist) joins forces with an extremely talented French cryptologist, Sophie Neveu, and they get to work straight away. She admits that it’s the most perplexing cipher that she’s come across in her whole career. Whilst investigating this she makes some fascinating discoveries about a secret society that involved very established individuals. Such as Sir Isaac Newton, Da Vinci, Victor Hug and more. But will she be able to piece together the puzzle to find out why the curator was murdered?

3. A Tale of Two Cities by Charles Dickens

Dickens gives a great account of the suffering and sacrifice that was made during the French Revolution. A time of radical political and societal change. He focuses on one family in this story and how they are threatened by events of the past. Doctor Manette is wrongly imprisoned in the Bastille for a heartwrenching 18 years before going to trial. He is finally proven innocent and released to reunite with his loved ones, in particular his daughter, Lucie. She has grown up in London and is very disconnected from her french ancestry. It follows her romance – falling in love with her country and the main protagonist Darnay. Who abandoned his wealth because of the political convictions in France.

4.The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle

I mean, who hasn’t read this book growing up? it’s without a doubt one of the most famous children’s books to exist. It’s a short story but filled with important lessons for children, on self-control, desires, happiness, growth and change. It tells the story through a hungry caterpillar who becomes greedy and starts eating everything in sight – lots of junk food. 1. Can’t Hurt Me: Master Your Mind and Defy the Odds by David Goggins

Goggins is very honest throughout this book and reveals traumatic events in his life from childhood through to adulthood, leaving no stones unturned. He shares the people/things that made him grow his mindset to become mentally stronger than ever. This book is not a motivational book – it’s much more. 2. Crying in H Mart by Michelle Zauner

Be prepared to bawl like a baby during this book. Zauner shares her experience of losing a mother at a young age whilst having a fairly absent father, whom she had little emotional connection. She shares what her life was like growing up without her mother to guide and support her through life. She had to learn to become strong and resilient by herself as she faced her struggles head-on. It explores her eagerness to connect with her culture and her efforts to strengthen her relationships with Korean relatives to feel a sense of self and belonging. It’s truly inspirational in the fact it shows regardless of your unfortunate upbringing and hardships, you can follow your dreams and make it by yourself.

3. The Diary of a Young Girl by Anne Frank

I’m sure everyone is aware of one of the most discussed Jewish victims of the Holocaust – Anne Frank. Her diary was found and later published, with no changes to her writing whatsoever. It includes the raw and real accounts of what a 13-year-old girl was experiencing during the Holocaust. Whilst also giving valuable information about this time period too and details of events that happened. The diary ends abruptly in 1945 when the Nazis broke into her family’s hiding place in Amsterdam. Franks life was unfairly taken, along with her family members. A truly heartbreaking story that should undoubtedly be included in all school curriculums.

4. Educated by Tara Westover

This book focuses on the story of a girl whose childhood began isolated in the beautiful mountains. Her father had an anti-establishment mindset that derived out of fear and insanity. As she grows, naturally, she wants to see more of what the world has to offer her. But she has to be brave and leave behind all she knows. She wants to learn about the world herself after being brainwashed by her father’s small-minded opinions her whole life. As she learns and grows she realises to the full extent of her father’s control over her. She was a victim, gaslighted, manipulated and brainwashed. It shows her fight to regain control over her life.

5. Greenlights by Matthew McConaughey

McConaughey tells the story of his life in a very genuine way in Greenlights. He faced a lot of hardships growing up, especially without a male figure in his life. But he choose to take control over his life and use his struggles to power him to be everything he wanted to be. He talks about the many low and high points of life and how to deal with them. He includes journal entries that he never expected other people to read in the time of writing. So it’s very honest and raw! He wants to teach people how to use their struggles as an advantage and not to feel defeated but empowered.

1. The Last Thing He Told Me: A Novel by Laura Dave

A fast-paced, gripping, thrilling story filled with mystery and suspense. It will keep you on the edge of your seat whilst you’re reading as quickly as possible, impatient to get to the next page. Daves story focuses predominately on the growing relationship between Hannah and Bailey. Bailey is a 16-year-old teenage girl that lost her mother recently, and Hannah is the new girlfriend of her dad. Not looking to replace her mother so soon, Bailey is very resilient towards having any sort of relationship with Hannah. But events take a sudden turn for the worse and Bailey finds herself leaning on Hannah whilst as they work through this mystery together.

2. The Four Winds by Kristin Hannah

This book will open your eyes to the less fortunate that are desperately struggling to make a living and feed their families. Elsa is the main protagonist in this story, it follows her life and the relentless hardships that she has to face. It’s set in a dust bowl in migrant settlements in California. It includes an incredible account of the aftermath and lots of historical detail. It’s heart wrenching and real.

3. People We Meet on Vacation by Emily Henry

The main protagonist in the story is a woman named Poppy Wright. She’s on a mission to make the most out of her life and wants to do this as far away from her hometown as possible (Linfield, Ohio). She doesn’t know what to expect but meeting the love of her life was definitely not on the cards. She meets someone who redefines what the meaning of ‘love’ and ‘home’ really means and he takes her on a journey that will change her life forever. All of the other protagonists in the story are intelligent, respectable, and ambitious. You can learn something from everyone. And Henry adds her wicked sense of humour to many scenarios throughout the book!

4. What Happened to You? Conversations on Trauma, Resilience, and Healing by Bruce D. Perry and Oprah Winfrey

This is an incredible insight into the way that the mind processes trauma. There are some very interesting points made throughout this book by all authors that will give you a deep understanding of trauma and its effects. The main point is – you cannot bounce back from trauma unchanged, once we experience it we are changed forever. But this isn’t necessarily a bad thing. We learn and grow from our past and can come out stronger on the other side. After reading this we can guarantee you will have a whole new positive perspective on trauma and how to deal with it in the best way.

5. The Wish by Nicholas Sparks

Sparks never disappoints. This story is written beautifully in a way that evokes many emotions throughout. Many describe it as an emotional rollercoaster but in a beautiful way. It focuses on real-life situations and all of the characters are very authentic. The main protagonist is dealing with a recent medical diagnosis that can potentially be life-threatening. As his condition deteriorates, we learn that not all stories have happy endings. It’s a raw and real account of living with an illness.

1. The Lord of the Rings by J. R. R. Tolkien

An absolute masterpiece! Even if you’ve already watched the films, this written novel takes the story to a whole other level. Tolkien writes and constructs the tale so beautifully that you’ll get completely lost in his fantasy world (or worlds should I say). He brings all of the characters to life in a way that makes it hard to believe that they are all created completely from his imagination. There is a huge variety of beasts and other mythological creatures that you will introduce as the story develops. Each brings a different dynamic to the story and has a special part to play.

2. The Hobbit, or There and Back Again by J. R. R. Tolkien

Another classic by the talented J. R. R. Tolkein! And once again, even if you’ve watched the film, this novel has the power to create a whole new world with the level of detail of the written word. Deep in a dark dingy wet hole lives a hobbit… and this hobit and his adventures is what dominates Tolkiens whole story. The hobbit is on a quest to capture a dangerous ring before it gets into the wrong hands and faces many obstacles of evil along the way. Originally, this novel was written for children. But it’s become a popular read for people of all ages, even the older generation! The details of the main characters and their mystical world are enough to satisfy anyone imagination.

3. The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho

A truly magical story that will leave you feeling inspired, powerful and ready to take on the world. The story is based on a young Andalusian shepherd boy, Santiago, and his quest for treasures that have been promised to fulfil him and change his life forever. His journey to find the treasure is not easy and he faces many struggles along the way. After many lessons have been learnt, he discovers the treasures he was looking for were always inside of himself. It’s essentially a story about listening to our heart and looking deep within for the answers we need along life’s journey

4. The Little Prince by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry

This novel is the most famous piece of work by French aristocrats, writers and poet Antoine de Saint-Exupéry. The story focuses on a pilot that ends up stranded in the desert and is finding ways to survive. Whilst on this island he encounters another small and feeble man that asks for his help. He wants the pilot to draw him a sheep… a very odd request. The main message in the story is that when life’s events are too difficult to understand we must make the right choices by looking deep within and surrender sometimes.

5. Da Vinci Code by Dan Brown

A spellbinding masterpiece and one of the reasons Brown became such a successful author! He dives into many conspiracy theories with his unique perspectives and backed up points that will certainly get you thinking. He also unravels many truths and hidden secrets on a whole range of topics, including religions (in particular Christianity). It’s a real eye-opener!
